BMW annuncia l'entrata nel WEC a partire dal 2018 con vetture GTE
BMW ha annunciato questa mattina che tornerà nel World Endurance Championship a partire dal 2018. La casa bavarese correrà in GTLM e la base della vettura sarà scelta tra la M5 e la M6.

BMW aveva annunciato qualche mese fa di voler rientrare nel World Endurance Championship e, da questa mattina, le intenzioni sono divenute ufficiali.
La casa che ha sede a Monaco di Baviera entrerà nel WEC a partire da 2018, raggiungendo così Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, Ford e Chevrolet, anche se non ha ancora diffuso dettagli riguardo il team e la vettura che sarà impiegata tra due stagioni nella classe GTE.
"A partire dalla stagione 2018 espanderemo le nostre attività nelle corse GT e competeremo nel FIA World Endurance Championship, così come nell'IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship", ha dichiarato il direttore di BMW Motorsport, Jens Marquardt.
"Ovviamente questo significherà anche che torneremo a correre alla 24 Ore di Le Mans. La strada che ha intrapreso il WEC nelle ultime stagioni crediamo che possa dare un grande futuro alle corse dedicate alle GT".
Riguardo il progetto GTE, BMW annuncerà ulteriori dettagli nelle prossime settimane. Il primo prototipo della vettura che entrerà nel WEC dal 2018 dovrebbe debuttare in pista per i primi test la prossima estate e, a base del modello, dovrebbe essere la M5 o la M6.
La BMW M6 GTLM sta correndo in questa stagione nella categoria IMSA e dovrebbe prendervi parte anche l'anno prossimo. C'è anche una versione GT3 della vettura che, sempre nel 2016, sta correndo in Blancpain GT Series.
