Joey Logano regola Johnson e conquista la pole
Sedicesima pole in Sprint Cup per il pilota del team Penske che replica quanto ottenuto nell'appuntamento di giugno dove aveva anche centrato il successo. Jimmie Johnson completa la prima fila mentre Hamlin ha ottenuto il terzo tempo.

Il tracciato di Michigan sembra piacere davvero molto a Joey Logano. Il pilota della vettura #22 del team Penske ha ottenuto la pole sul tracciato dove aveva già ottenuto il miglior tempo e la vittoria nell'appuntamento di giugno.
Logano è stato il primo pilota a scendere in pista ed ha regolato Jimmie Johnson (201.523mph) che così dividerà la prima fila con il pilota del team Penske, mentre alle loro spalle Denny Hamlin (201.416mph), Kevin Harvick (201.382mph) Chase Elliott (201.303mph) ed Alex Bowman hanno completato le prime tre file.
Ryan Blaney (201.202mph), Jamie McMurray (201.039mph), Carl Edwards (201.005mph), Ryan Newman (200.039mph), Kasey Kahne (200.028mph) e Kyle Larson (199.341mph) hanno concluso in top 12.
Nel secondo round il miglior tempo è stato inizialmente fatto segnare da Ryan Blaney (200.932mph), superato successivamente dal duo Ganassi composto da Kyle Larson e Jamie McMurray. A metà sessione Chase Elliott si è insierito tra Larson e McMurray conquistando il secondo tempo, mentre Denny Hamlin (201.112mph), Jimmie Johnson (201.061mph) and Kevin Harvick (201.016mph). Blaney, Joey Logano (200.647mph), Alex Bowman (200.607mph), Carl Edwards (200.557mph), Kasey Kahne (200.512mph) e Ryan Newman (200.507mph) sono riusciti ad accedere al round finale.
Nel primo round è stato Jimmie Johnson l'autore del miglior tempo precedendo Denny Hamlin e Kyle Larson (200.647mph). Il quarto crono è stato ottenuto da Paul Menard seguito da Chase Elliott (200.273mph), Alex Bowman (200.206mph), Martin Truex Jr. (200.200mph), Joey Logano (200.006mph), Matt Kenseth (200.000mph) e Kurt Busch (199.978mph), mentre tra gli esclusi della prima fase troviamo Ryan Newman, Greg Biffle, Brad Keselowski, Austin Dillon, Chris Buescher, Danica Patrick e Trevor Bayne.
