Power batte Newgarden e conquista la pole position di IndyCar a St.Petersburg
Will Power ha centrato la sua 55a pole position in carriera in IndyCar a St.Petersburg (l'ottava in 10 anni sul tracciato in Florida) battendo il suo compagno di squadra del Team Penske-Chevrolet, Josef Newgarden per soli 0"0976.

Power ha completato il miglior giro in 60"4594 ad una velocità media di 107.179mp/h, conquistando la partenza al palo.
Felix Rosenqvist (Chip Ganassi Racing-Honda) ha invece concluso terzo seguito da Scott Dixon, ma entrambi possono ritenersi più che soddisfatti per essersi messi alle spalle Ryan Hunter-Reay ed Alexander Rossi (Andretti Autosport-Honda).
Colton Herta (Harding Steinbrenner Racing) ha invece avuto qualifiche complicate vedendosi annullare i suoi migliori giri in Q2 per aver ostacolato Charlie Kimball, il che lo costringerà a partire dall'undicesima piazza.
Questo ha consentito a Rosenqvist si andare a giocarsi la pole nella manche successiva, dove Dixon è finito in testacoda perdendo la possibilità di attaccare il primo posto.
Nel frattempo, Sato ha causato una bandiera gialla tagliando una variante; il giapponese si è visto annullare il miglior giro scivolando al 20° posto.
In Q1 ci sono state parecchie bandiere rosse. Andretti si è fermato in prossimità dell'ingresso della pitlane, il che avrebbe teoricamente dovuto cancellargli i due tempi migliori, se però li avesse realizzati (cosa che ancora non aveva fatto).
Poco dopo la ripartenza, Santino Ferrucci (Dale Coyne Racing-Honda) è andato lungo alla curva 13, con Charlie Kimball (Carlin-Chevrolet) che è passato in Q2 assieme ad un ottimo Ben Hanley quinto.
Fuori Sebastien Bourdais e Simon Pagenaud (Penske-Chevy #22).
