Alexander Rossi sconfigge Scott Dixon e conquista la pole a Long Beach
Il pilota dell'Andretti Autosport ha conquistato la sua seconda pole consecutiva a Long Beach rifilando oltre due decimi a Dixon. Terzo tempo per Will Power bravo a precedere Newgarden e Pagenaud.

Alexander Rossi è riuscito a conquistare la sua seconda pole consecutiva a Long Beach grazie ad un giro praticamente perfetto che gli ha consentito di precedere Scott Dixon di due decimi e mezzo. Il pilota del Chip Ganassi Racing sembrava essere decisamente più veloce, ma ha deciso di abbandonare in curva 9.
Will Power, nonostante le difficoltà vissute nelle Libere, ha pagato un gap di 4 decimi dalla pole ma è stato in grado di chiudere davanti ai propri compagni di team Josef Newgarden e Simon Pagenaud, così come alla vettura di Graham Rahal.
Sorprendente l’esclusione di Ryan Hunter-Reay al termine del Q2, complice anche una strategia di gomme non corretta. Il pilota dell’Andretti Autosport scatterà al fianco di Takuma Sato. Anche il giapponese ha pagato a caro prezzo la stessa tattica.
Patricio O’Ward ha ottenuto il nono riferimento e prenderà il via con al suo fianco l’ex rivale in Indy Lights, Colton Herta, mentre Marco Andretti non è riuscito a fare meglio dell’undicesimo tempo.
Ha molto da recriminare Felix Rosenqvist. Il pilota del team Ganassi, nonostante avesse tutte le possibilità di entrare nella Firestone Fast Six, è andato a sbattere contro le barriere costringendo la direzione ad esporre la bandiera rossa. Lo svedese ha perso i suoi due giri migliori e partirà dodicesimo.
Identica difficoltà è stata vissuta da Tony Kanaan, andato a sbattere in curva 6 nella Q1 del Gruppo 1. La bandiera rossa gli è costata i suoi migliori tempi ed ha penalizzato anche Hinchcliffe, Ericsson, Jones e Santino Ferrucci.
Sebastien Bourdais, tre volte vincitore di Long Beach, è stato eliminato nel Q1 così come Max Chilton, Jack Harvey, Matheus Leist, Zach Veach e Spencer Pigot.
