Horner: "Red Bull penalizzata dalla nuova aerodinamica e dalle gomme ribassate"

Il team principal della Red Bull ha individuato i punti deboli della RB15 e afferma: "Dovremo lavorare sul telaio, perché Honda sta davvero facendo un grande lavoro".

La RB15 non è, almeno al momento, una monoposto vincente. Ma Max Verstappen è stato in grado sino a ora di fare meglio delle Ferrari SF90 di Sebastian Vettel e Charles Leclerc, tanto da occupare la terza posizione nella classifica mondiale dietro a Lewis Hamilton e Valtteri Bottas.

La Red Bull sta lavorando sodo per migliorare la propria monoposto 2019. Per ora i progressi fatti sono stati incoraggianti, anche se Verstappen ha dovuto faticare non poco per riuscire a sfruttarne tutto il potenziale.

Christian Horner, team principal della squadra che ha sede a Milton Keynes, crede che la situazione in cui imperversa la Red Bull sia da ascrivere al cambio di regolamento tecnico, ossia le novità aerodinamiche all'anteriore, e alle gomme dal battistrada più sottile rispetto alla passata stagione.

"Probabilmente è una combinazione dei due fattori", ha spiegato Horner. "Ovviamente su queste gomme c'è il 25% del battistrada in meno e sono più rigidi. Alla fine della passata stagione eravamo riusciti a capire molto bene le gomme".

"Penso anche che i concetti aerodinamici che abbiamo evoluto negli ultimi anni siano stati molto influenti sui mutamenti delle monoposto. Quindi dobbiamo semplicemente ribilanciare tutto quanto e far funzionare tutto nella giusta finestra".

Horner pensa che lo sviluppo della RB15 passi soprattutto dal telaio, perché Honda continuerà a spingere per avere una power unit sempre più prestazionale.

"Tutto ruota attorno all'evoluzione della monoposto, perché Honda sta facendo buoni progressi. La loro affidabilità rispetto agli anni passati è fantastica. Le prestazioni sono ottime, ma i nostri avversari non staranno a guardare".

"Abbiamo visto come la Ferrari abbia introdotto un nuovo motore nell'ultimo fine settimana, così come Renault è riuscita a portare novità per Barcellona. Mercedes farà certamente girare un altro motore a Montreal. I nostri avversari non sono fermi. Ma noi siamo felici per i progressi che abbiamo fatto sino a ora".

Horner pensa inoltre che il mondiale sia già targato Mercedes: "Questo è un campionato della Mercedes. Per il momento sono quasi riusciti a ottenere il punteggio massimo disponibile. Ma mancano ancora tante gare e noi dobbiamo prendere corsa per corsa".

"Chiunque può essere battuto. La F1 è incentrata sul lavoro di squadra, anche per i team più grandei al mondo. Mercedes, al momento, è sulla cresta dell'onda, ma questo non dura mai per sempre. Il nostro compito è garantire di avere tutti gli strumenti e le capacita per affrontare queste sfide anche nei prossimi anni".
