Will Power vola ad Austin e conquista la sua prima pole stagionale
Il pilota del team Penske ha conquistato al COTA la pole numero 56 in carriera riuscendo a precedere un ottimo Alexander Rossi per poco più di 1 decimo.

Will Power ha conquistato la pole al Circuit of the Americas grazie al crono di 1’14’’018 riuscendo a precedere Alexander Rossi di un decimo e mezzo e Ryan Hunter-Reay di 3 decimi. Per il pilota del team Penske questa è la pole numero 56 in carriera.
In occasione della Firestone Fast Six, il campione 2014 ha commesso due errori nel suo primo giro veloce, ma quando è tornato ai box ha montato un set di rosse usate ed una volta sceso in pista è riuscito a sconfiggere i due piloti del team Andretti.
Colton Herta ha mantenuto le promesse viste in qualifica centrando un brillante quarto posto riuscendo a precedere i due piloti del Chip Ganassi Racing, Felix Rosenqvist e Scott Dixon, mentre il vincitore dell’appuntamento inaugurale di St. Petersubrg, Josef Newgarden, è stato escluso al termine della Q2 e prenderà il via al fianco della Carlin del campione Indy Lights 2018 Pato O’Ward.
La quinta fila vedrà la presenza della terza vettura dell’Andretti Autosport, affidata a Zach Veach, che scatterà davanti a Graham Rahal dopo aver preceduto il pilota del Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing di 4 decimi.
Alle loro spalle scatteranno l’ex F2 Santino Ferrucci ed il pilota di casa Matheus Leist, mentre in Q1 nel Gruppo 1, Max Chilton non è stato all’altezza delle performance fornite dal compagno di team O’Ward ottenendo solamente il tredicesimo crono.
Jack Harvey è finito in testacoda in curva 19 ed ha così vanificato i suo tempi migliori influenzando negativamente anche le prestazioni di James Hinchcliffe, Sebastien Bourdais e Spencer Pigot.
Tony Kanaan ha compiuto un errore simile nella stessa curva in Q1 nel Gruppo 2 penalizzando un Simon Pagenaud particolarmente frustrato che ha ripercorso una situazione simile a quelle vissuta a St. Petersburg a seguito del crash di Ferrucci.
